Why Automotive Antifreeze Isn't Good Enough For Your Diesel Engine!

Unlike an automobile or conventional gas system, a diesel system's substantially higher load factor, longer life, and unique wet sleeve linear design create very special maintenance needs. Automobile engines do not use wet sleeve liners, but diesel engines do. Wet sleeve liners vibrate intensely during normal operation and cause a special form of corrosion called "cavitation corrosion" (or liner pitting).

A wet sleeve liner can perforate in less than 1,000 hours if the coolant chemical protection level is not maintained. When perferation occurs, coolant can leak into the crankcase, destroying the bearings and crankshaft. The end result is an expensive engine rebuild and possible cylinder block damage. Diesel engine antifreeze contains supplemental coolant additives that help prevent linear pitting.

The expected operational life of a heavy duty diesel engine is four to five times greater than a gasoline engine. Also in diesel applications, the gross vehicle weight per horsepower produced is five to eight times greater than automobile applications. This higher load factor requires more fuel be burned -- resulting in more waste heat for the cooling system to dissipate. Waste heat must flow freely through the cylinder liner, head, oil cooler, aftercooler, and radiator. If this flow process of heat transfer is interrupted, wear rates go up and engine efficiency and life go down. The "Green Goo" that is produced by using a high silicate automotive antifreeze in a diesel engine is an important factor in slowing the rate of heat transfer in a cooling system. Most antifreeze and coolant products on the market are formulated to meet the less demanding needs of passenger cars. These products do not contain the proper blend of chemicals to prevent heavy duty diesel engine damage. For example, the scaling or fouling of cylinder liners can result in greatly increased ring wear and greatly reduced engine life. Liner pitting and deposits on heat transfer surfaces (head, liners, radiator, oil cooler) may result when automotive light duty antifreeze is used in heavy duty engines.

Non-Toxic
Our new formula with polycol is non-toxic and is not viewed as hazardous by the EPA!

How COMPLEAT heavy-duty antifreeze is formulated:

  • Low silicate base -- Prevents "green goo" which plugs radiator cores.
  • Contains a supplemented coolant additive -- Protects against liner pitting and scale buildup.
  • Low nitrate supplemented coolant additive -- Prevents solder bloom.
  • Contains a surfactant -- Keeps small amounts of oil from coating the cooling system parts and reducing heat transfer.
